The district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen has developed a comprehensive cycling concept in collaboration with the planning office Green-Solutions with the aim of strengthening cycling in everyday life and for leisure.
The planned 2024 cycle network comprises 866 km of existing cycle routes. Measures to mitigate danger spots and upgrade 81 km have been identified. In addition, the proposal for the future cycle network contains gaps in the network with 368 km of new routes, 187 km of which require road construction modifications in order to be designated as cycle routes.
The concept is characterized by four main objectives: expansion of the infrastructure, coordination by a cycling officer, proactive communication measures and joining AGFK Bayern e.V. for long-term bicycle friendliness.
After two years of intensive planning, which included citizen participation, bike tours and workshops, the concept was adopted in autumn 2024. With dedicated measures such as an interactive commuter breakfast and the “Consideration makes paths wide” campaign, the district is already providing clear impetus for sustainable mobility in the 2024 cycling season.
